Stop “phantom” power usage. Many appliances and electronic devices use a tiny quantity of electricity even once they are turned off. To forestall this power slippage, unplug all appliances after using. Plug all of your computing devices into a power strip and unplug the strip when you’re finished computing.
Scale back heat loss from windows. If your windows aren’t new and energy efficient, install indoor storm window kits obtainable at most building material retailers. Stop air infiltration by making positive that the plastic is securely fastened around the whole perimeter of the window. To reduce radiant heat loss, shut your curtains and shades at night.
Save water. Install low flow aerators and shower heads to reduce water usage. If you’ve got a leaky faucet or bathroom that runs on after flushing, repair it. Unchecked this running water will quickly run up your water bill.
Scale back your water heating costs. Lower the thermostat on your water heater to no over 120 degrees. Insulate your water heater. This is significantly vital if your water heater is located in an area of your home that is unheated. Insulating your water heater can reduce stand-by heat loss by 25-40 per cent and save you up to five per cent on your annual water heating bill. A typical family of 4 spends on average $350 for hot water. Your initial year’s savings ($15-seventeen) can purchase the insulation kit and you may be cash ahead in future years.
Maximize your heating dollars. Lower your thermostat in the winter and lift it in the summer. You’ll be surprised how quickly your body can adapt to the new “traditional” temperatures. Add or take away clothing as needed to maintain your comfort level. Optimize the performance of your heating system by changing it’s air filters regularly. Create certain your heat air registers, baseboard heaters or radiators are not blocked by furniture or drapes.
Turn off lights when you leave a room. This can be a simple but effective approach to avoid wasting energy. In todays world of environmentally friendly goods one of the first you will come across is CFL bulbs. Every expert is telling you that if you want a have an earth friendly home you need to replace all of your bulbs to CFLs.
There is no denying that CFL bulbs use less electricity, which in turn means you save money on your power bills and benefit the environment.
But, what are they not telling you? CFL bulbs use mercury, if it breaks you are in a contaminated area, and need to go. It is really hazardous, so normal clean up is not feasible. If you sweep it up, you have dispersed the mercury to your entire house. You are now surrounded by mercury.
On the packages, they advice you to dispose of the bulbs in a correct manner. This means not in your normal garbage. But, the actuality is people are throwing them out, and our landfills are being contaminated on a daily basis. To saythrow away in a proper manner does not mean it will happen. The reality is most buyers want power savings, not environmental ones.
The dark secret of CFL bulbs, is dirty electricity (which is electromagnetic pollution), and ultraviolet radiation.
According to Health Canada there is UV radiation present, but there are no studies to decide how harmful CFL bulbs are. In the United Kingdom, they have started to do research, and have established that 1 in 5 bulbs emit unusual amounts of UV radiation. There are acknowledged cases of rash, headaches, dizziness, joint pain, and blistering caused by the CFL bulbs, but at this time there are no rules governing the production of the bulbs.
There is very little knowledge of the effects of electromagnetic pollution. This is the pollution that is also connected with cell phones. There are people who claim headaches, disorientation, and rashes. But again very few scientists are researching the long term effects of CFL bulbs.
In fact, if you do a search of CFL bulbs, you see very little on the health warnings. Everyone is promoting them as the right ‘green’ choice for your home. The big manufacturing companies have done there job, we do not get the truth about the health issues of the bulbs.
So, what do you do?
There are choices for earth friendly lights. You can use CLED lights, but unfortanetly they are very expensive at this time. So they are better for you and the environment, but the average person can’t afford them.
The next choice is to ensure that your CFL bulb has a prasmatic diffuser (this is a fancy way of saying the ones with the covers). There is not a guarantee that they are better for the environment, they still contain mercury, but researchers in the UK have determined that the diffuser helps lessen the ‘dirty’ electricity by a significant amount. One report I read stated by as much as 70%, which places it equal to a radio.
Compact Flourescent Lights are not the solution, but until CLED lights become more affordable, we are limited in our choices. So, ensure your CFLs have the diffuser, and try not to sit too close to them for long periods of time ( more than an hour) and hope the governments get off their butts and force the manufacturers to find a superior alternative that is beneficial for us and the environment.

Nowadays when the world faces growing global warming, as more and more harmful greenhouse gases pour out into the atmosphere, more and more people are wondering how to become green and make it cost efficient too. The good news is that it’s very easy to do. In fact, done properly it’s hard not to save money while helping the planet recover. So, here’s how to become green (and save money) in 7 simple tips.
1. Lower your winter heating by at least one degree. If you can stand two or three degrees lower, then all the better. You will use less power and still feel comfortable. Then in summer, let the air conditioning cool the house a little less. That’s a great start in how to become green.
2. Set your washing machine to wash clothes in cold water. Modern cleaning powders don’t need hot water, and heating the water is what uses most of the energy that the washing machine uses.
3. Don’t use the dryer to dry your clothes! That’s not how to go green. It uses far too much energy and it’s expensive too. Hang your clothes out to dry. The air is great at drying clothes – your grandmother could have told you that.
4. Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs use one tenth of the energy that a standard bulb needs and they last 10 times longer. So, change your light bulbs. And if you want to know how to become green in a bigger way with lights, check out the new LED bulbs. They can be twice as efficient as the CFL bulbs.
5. Use less water. Check all faucets for leaks and fix any you find. Take shorter showers, don’t bath, and think about getting a new toilet cistern that will use less than two gallons of water per flush. Standard cistern use some three and a half gallons. Using less water uses less energy and saves you money!
6. Walk rather than drive for very short trips. Use a bicycle for moderate trips, and only use the car if you really have to. Gasoline is expensive and it pollutes the atmosphere. Save on burning it and you will save on your money too, as well as help the environment.
7. When you have to drive, keep your speed down to around 55 miles per hour if possible. Your car’s engine will be running at its most efficient at that speed burning the minimum amount of gas. Practice driving smoothly as well. Don’t accelerate fast from a standing start, and don’t brake hard. This is how to become green with your car, though using public transport, walking and cycling is even better.
