The magic that allows you to heat and cool your home with solar energy stored in water or in the earth !

Geothermal heating and cooling systems use the natural constant ambient temperature of the earth to heat in the winter and cool in the summer. This is accomplished with a compressor or heat pump unit, the liquid heat exchanger medium, and the air delivery system.
Quite simply, geothermal systems in heating take heat from the earth, transfer that heat to a refrigerant, then distribute the heat into the structure with a forced-air or hydronic system.
In cooling, geothermal systems take heat from the structure, transfer the heat to the refrigerant, then transfer the heat back to the water or loop fluid. This works the same as a standard air conditioner, except a geothermal systems uses water or loop fluid at a constant temperature (average 50 degrees) instead of varying outdoor temperature.
In other words, it’s like heating and cooling your home when it’s 50 degrees outside all year!

Since water from the Earth is a constant temperature (approximately 55 degrees F in the Northeast), the WSHP has a constant source of 55 degrees F energy with a open loop system.
With a closed loop system the fluid circulates continuously inside the buried pipe, absorbing heat from the earth during the winter for use inside your home or business. In warmer months, the fluid takes heat from indoors and transfers it back into the earth.
An increasingly popular approach, especially in residential systems, is a “slinky” coil. A slinky is a coil of plastic tubing spread out and overlapped in a trench and buried. Slinky coils are installed horizontally at the bottom of a three-foot-wide trench. (Depth my vary by location, but at least 5 ft.) This method concentrates the heat transfer surface into small volume, requiring less land area and shorter trenching – a big plus for homeowners.
The WSHP is not subject to freezing like an AAHP unit, and operates without any problem regardless of outside temperatures.
The WSHP is extremely efficient; up to 400% more efficient than conventional heating systems according to the US Department of Energy.

Another feature on most geothermal systems is a Hot Water Generator. Hot Water Generators, or HWG’s, take refrigerant from the compressor, where it is very hot, and directs it to another small coaxial heat exchanger. In this HWG heat exchanger, water from a standard domestic hot water tank flows through, picking up heat from the hot refrigerant. This heat exchanger is double-walled, and vented so that there would be no contamination from the refrigerant if a leak occurred.

The HWG accomplishes three functions.

First, it typically heats 60% to 80% of a home’s hot water for FREE utilizing waste heat from the refrigeration process.
Second, it increases the efficiency of the compressor by removing some of the heat from the compressor.
Third, it increases the life expectancy of the compressor by allowing it to operate at a cooler temperature.

Environmentally Friendly Cars Have Same Insurance Costs

Although a large number of people are wanting to do their bit for the environment and trade their unhealthy car for a greener alternative, some fear the costs will be too high. A leading financial website has revealed however that people switching to these greener automobiles will not be paying more for their insurance than they would if they stuck with their standard cars

Following their recent statement regarding ‘green office insurance’, online giant Moneysavingexpert.com told motorists that if and when they decide to choose a car that is kinder to the planet, their wallets will not be paying the price instead. The insurance for these types of car, including electric and hybrid options, will be very closely matched to their petrol counterparts and will actually be cheaper in lots of other areas. These include

• Lower cost of fuel as electrical cars are much cheaper to fill up than all-petrol or diesel cars

• Lower tax as the government is implementing tax breaks for environmentally friendly vehicles

• Lower excise duty, in some cases this is scrapped all together for green cars.

The government are among a number of groups who have welcomed this news with open arms as one of their current initiatives is to get people to buy more fuel-efficient and less harmful automobiles. If people felt they were getting a raw deal on their insurance and that they would be more out of pocket going green, they simply wouldn’t change what they had.

Following the government’s scrappage scheme which seems to be going well, there are even talks of bringing in an insurance subsidy plan if green cars or green business vans insurance costs do increase at all. This will help out not only individuals with their insurance costs but also vehicle-based companies who are being urged to go green but are wary about increases in their business insurance costs

Solar Cost – A One Time Investment?

If you are thinking of going green, solar panels might give you an interesting solution. Quietly they will convert sunlight into electricity, giving you DC voltage as the final output. For your home devices this voltage should be inverted to AC.

To make it happen there are some solar kits that you need to purchase. These kits are determined by how would you want to have the system installed. There are three different set-ups you can choose. First is on-grid, meaning you have the solar electricity integrated with the utility grid. This is the most popular option because you need to spend less money compared to other systems.

Why on-grid is less expensive? Since you don’t need to store the solar electricity in batteries you need to purchase the solar inverter only. This cut down the price because solar batteries are quite expensive. Note that because you don’t have battery back up during power blackout you will have no electricity.

The next choice you have the solar system integrated with utility grid similar to the first option but backed up with solar batteries. The advantage of this system is it gives you power redundancy, the battery bank will release the current to power your home during utility blackout. To have this system you will need to buy solar regulator, solar batteries and solar inverter which differs from the solar inverter we are talking about in the first option. Bringing in these parts to the system obviously increase your spending budget.

The last option is you have it off-grid. This system is normally picked up by people living in remote areas where utility lines are not available. Here you will need to purchase the solar charge controller, solar batteries and also solar inverter. Same as other options mentioned above you also need to buy other items such as wiring, terminal connections, etc. The inverter for this system is different from the other types mentioned above. You may need to backup this system with gas generator or wind turbine in case of sun outages.

Now let us see how much really they will cost you. To make a rough estimation you can think about $15K to $60K. The cost will actually depend on how far do you want to substitute your fossil powered electricity. A 100% substitution is not recommended at all because the cost will kill you.

There are at least two other factors determining the solar cost. One is the quality of solar parts and the other is the solar installation cost. Solar inverters quality for example varies greatly leading to different prices. Solar installation companies have different prices as well.

If you want to reduce the cost there is a good solution offered by the US government. Installing green energy in your house will allow you to get 30% federal tax benefit plus other tax benefit given by the states. By sending the electricity to the grid you also get some credits from the utility company.

You don’t really need to have your home 100% powered by solar electricity. Start from 15% or 20% and you will see the utility bill’s difference. Anytime you are comfortable with the budget you can always upgrade the home solar system.

Is it true that home solar system needs a one time investment only? The reality is some parts have shorter lifespan, i.e. batteries and solar inverters while other part such as solar panels can stand for 30 years. Most likely you will have to spend money for some parts so it would be better to have this possibility counted into your calculation.

The best way to determine your solar cost is by contacting some solar companies. They can give you great advice based on what information you feed them.

Burning wood pellets and other biomass fuel pellets efficiently depends on several factors including volume; speed and temperature of combustion air and burn pot designs. Alternative green energy refers to any form of electricity generation that is sustainable and has a limited negative impact on the environment. There are a range of methods. Some of these have been well received like wind, solar and hydro power. Others are more controversial and include using geothermal power and biofuels.

Wind power is a highly versatile form of alternative green energy. Wind is able to propel the vanes of a windmill which can then drive an electric turbine. Wind power does have advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are that wind is free and abundant. The disadvantages include the noise of the rotating vanes if windmills are placed close to residential areas. Conservationists have also argued that too many windmills together are an eyesore that mars the beauty of the countryside.

Solar energy is a popular alternative green energy system. The energy of the sun could potentially be harnessed to power every home on the planet. Solar power is used to heat water that is fed into pipes for heating and hot water supply. Solar heated water can be transformed into hydrogen gas which is used for driving turbines. Solar energy can also be converted into direct electricity with photovoltaic solar panels. It is often argued that the production of solar cells is expensive and creates its’ own environmental problems.

Governments around the world seek alternative green energy systems that are cost effective and easily implemented. For many countries hydroelectric power has provided the ideal solution. As this particular alternative green energy is run by water pressure to drive electric turbines, the natural resources are readily available to be taken advantage of. Also, flooding farmland to create lakes, has caused land being lost for agricultural use.

Geothermal power is an alternative green energy that has had some limited application. The principle behind it is to utilize the heat stored in rocks very far below the earth’s surface. Molten rock called magma at the earth’s core can heat up rock to super hot temperatures. Water is pumped through bore holes down into the ground where it can be heated by this energy source. The same water is then forced out through a second bore hole as a jet of steam.

Power plants can be operated using the steam generated by geothermal power, Geothermal power is an alternative green energy solution that is yet to see widespread implementation. This is because of the extremely high costs associated with drilling water holes. Further, it remains unclear what implications exist for causing earthquakes by geothermal power drilling.

Energy produced from plants is known as biofuel. Either oil pressed from plants or pure alcohol that can be distilled from them is used to fuel engines. As plants can be continuously farmed, biofuels are seen as an alternative green energy. There is however, a lot of controversy surrounding biofuels. One is the massive expanses of land required to produce the crops which some argue could otherwise be used for food.

Why Is Safe And Clean Energy So Important?

When most people think of safe and clean energy, what comes to mind is usually basic information that’s not particularly interesting or beneficial. But there’s a lot more to safe and clean energy than just the basics.

Clean energy technologies-particularly clean energy infrastructures such as wind, clean fuels, and solar-are key to reducing the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Oracle has an outstanding track record for delivering business value to clean energy companies.

Wind power continues to dominate renewable energy, both in installed capacity and manufacturing. However, installations are fragmented with 40% of 9.8 gw installed capacity from projects that are less that 5 mw. Wind, solar and biomass projects can be hugely expensive, and sometimes downright uneconomical. But FITs let investors get a return, and they create a guaranteed market for renewable electricity, which encourages development.

Fuel cell technology is a particularly important enabler for biomass utilisation offering high efficiencies of conversion in fairly small unit sizes and is essential to the new distributed energy economy. Fuel cells can then convert hydrogen to electrical energy to power anything from vehicles and homes to electronic devices.

Investors will not expect all companies to be experts in climatology, but they will expect every company to see and understand a trend of this magnitude and make sure the firm does not get left behind. Investment in the United States fell by 2% and in Europe growth was very much muted.

Solar customers typically use sonar-like time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) to measure molecular contaminants other techniques may miss. The “echo” from an ionic beam projected onto the substrate reveals the presence of oils, particles and residues. Solar made large gains, recording growth of 49 percent to reach total investment of $33.5 billion. Geothermal was the highest growth sector, with investment up 149 percent to $2.2 billion, but bio fuels dropped by 9 percent to $16.9 billion.

The kind of energy that renews itself after use are the things in nature that have been around for eons and will be around for eternity. When the average household turns on a light switch, many take for granted the light will come on. So with everyone taking electricity for granted, imagine the chaos if one day there was no electricity available. That is why it is imperative for this young adult generation to explore classes that teach installation and use of do it yourself solar power.

Any type of renewable energy has been in existence for a long time. People are not as involved in learning about this as they should be. Nature provides all the energy anyone living on the Earth should need to live comfortably. Not only from the nature aspect, but think of the money that would be saved monthly with no electric bill.

The panels used to gain energy from the sun should have a reflective surface. Aluminum is one of the best items to use for this. Inside the aluminum panel houses the pipes that get and keep the energy gathered from the sun. Which then gets transformed into energy.

The next step is wiring the energy harnessing panel to the power unit that distributes energy inside the home. Power units consist of 12 Volt batteries attached by romex cable to one inverter, and two panel boxes. One panel box is for ac power, and the other for dc power. Next, you will have to purchase a unique meter that reads incoming current and outgoing current. The current that is not needed to energize the home, will return to the ac power lines. This current will be read via the unique meter, and you will receive a check from your electric company for the power created from your solar energy source.

When a home owner decides to go with solar energy. The power company must have a full list of contacts to be able to call you in case of a power line failure. When you are pushing electricity back into the power lines, and the power company shuts their source down. Your source is still pumping power through the lines. To an unknown repairman this mistake could be deadly.

All in all solar power is the best known alternative with helping the global warming crisis. The heat is used up, unlike the heat that is given off from huge industrial power plants.

5.When shopping, stay away from going for the throwaway items. Disposable products need more landfills and landfills emit dangerous gasses. Go instead for items that could be used several times over. Again when shopping, go for products that are made of better quality. They might be a little more expensive but generally, quality products last longer.

6.Bring your own bags when shopping. Paper bags are made from trees; the environment can use more of them. Plastic bags on the contrary are oil based and are not biodegradable. If you bring your bag with you, you do not only aid in saving energy, you could also get a discount from your store.

7.Batteries have toxic materials. They produce heavy metal like zinc, zinc, arsenic, cadmium, mercury etc. Thus, disposal needs appropriate care. Once the heavy metal in batteries seeped into the ground it has a good chance of contaminating the ground. When buying products that would need batteries, pick those that are rechargeable. That way battery disposal is limited and you save on the cost of buying new batteries.

8.Good thing that SUV sales everywhere are going down (well, at least for the environment and not for car manufacturers). SUVs use much more energy than compact automobiles for the same distance. While using SUV’s could be fun, there is also that tinge of lack of sympathy to the current energy issues and environmental problems we are facing. Reducing the use of SUVs on the street may not mean much in terms greenhouse gas emissions but is a signal to manufacturers to build more energy efficient vehicles.

9.The use of solar power is an excellent idea if you want to tackle the issues of energy conservation and environment protection. If there is one thing that the world needs most at this time, it is the widespread use of solar power.

I was first introduced to solar energy in the movie, “Race the Sun” with James Belushi and Halley Berry in the lead. It was a tale about low- income and under achieving Hawaiian students encouraged by their teacher to join the Solar Car battle. In the movie, a car shaped like a cockroach and covered with solar panels used the sun’s rays as an alternative energy source to run the auto.

Solar energy is the light and the heat from the sun. Solar energy is free and its supplies are unlimited. There are no air and water contamination caused by using solar energy. But there is still some impact on the environment, although not direct.

If you have ever dreamed of being entirely energy independent, then your ultimate goal is to live “off grid”. Most people who live off grid are situated in remote areas where electric utility service is not even available. But more and more people are considering it as a personal lifestyle choice.

There are two main factors involved in living off-grid. First, you’ll need to become very attentive of when and how you use electricity. You won’t have to live without it, but you won’t want to misuse it, either.

Second, you’ll want to become familiar with how your solar power system works, and what type of maintenance is required. It would be best if you become an expert on your particular system, so you can troubleshoot anything unforeseen that arises. Becoming an expert is not that tough to do since there is so much information on solar energy available now. But it will require time and commitment on your part.

A basic off-grid system is made up of 9 components.

First, the photovoltaic array and mounting rack. Wikipedia describes the array as “a linked collection of photovoltaic modules, which are in turn made of multiple interconnected solar cells”. The mounting rack allows you to attach them the roof and point them toward the sun.

Second, the array DC disconnect. This is basically a breaker connecting the array and the rest of the system. It allows you to disconnect from the system in order to troubleshoot problems with the array.

Third, the charge controller keeps the batteries from overcharging.

Fourth, the battery bank stores excess electricity. You will usually need enough batteries for 2-3 days worth of stored electricity in case of a cloudy period.

Fifth, the system meter is like your car’s dashboard. It reports how the various components in your system are doing.

Sixth, is the main DC disconnect. This is a breaker between the storage batteries and the inverter.

Seventh, is the inverter. This is the component that transforms the DC (direct current) electricity, which is generated by the array and stored in the batteries, into the AC (alternating current) electricity that can be used by your household appliances.

Eighth, the AC breaker panel. This is the same sort of breaker panel that the electric company uses to connect your house wiring to its electrical source.

Ninth, your backup generator. This is in case you have a stretch of cloudy days that outlast the electricity stored in the batteries. You can use traditional fossil fuels, but you’ll probably want to use biodiesel to maintain your green lifestyle.

Now that you’ve seen the components of the photovoltaic system, you can see why it’s not that complicated to become your own expert. Each component is relatively simple. The only moving parts are in the backup generator, and you hopefully won’t be using that very much.

Refrain from using hot water when washing your clothes. Also, it will give you much savings if you prefer washing on full loads. On your dishwasher, make sure you also full load them.
