Cruise Ships Strive To Be Environmentally Friendly

January 24, 2010 by Gogreen

Cruise lines have recently come under a great deal of pressure from governments to clean up their act and make cruising a more sustainable and environmentally friendly activity. Cruise ships have long been known to be one of the more ‘unclean’ modes of transport, which is an image many cruise lines are keen to move away from. Add to this the fact that many governments are now charging cruise companies extra in tax for high carbon emissions, and cleaning up cruises suddenly seems like a good idea to companies. Here are 3 of the latest ‘green’ cruising developments.

Improved Ship Efficiency. Old ship designs really didn’t have their environmental impact in mind, but the latest ships are built from sustainable materials and put together using eco-friendly techniques. The materials are getting lighter so less energy is needed for propulsion, soft sails are often being included, and a company in Ireland have pioneered a biogas-powered engine, set to soon be used by Cunard Cruises. The very same Irish company are also working on hydrodynamic hulls that actually convert wave energy into forward momentum.

Hybrid Boats. Automobiles that rely on both fuel combustion and battery power have been around for a little while now and have proved very popular. Now ship builders such as those making boats for Silversea Cruises are getting in on the action and making boats that couple the traditional diesel power with electrical power. When a ship comes into harbor it is connected to the shoreside power source and gets a quick charge up of its huge batteries

Cargo-Pooling. A great idea being trialled by Oceania Cruises is ‘cargo sharing’. If a cruise ship has not filled all its spaces, it can offer to carry commercial cargo for other companies sending things to the same place, for a small commission of course. The cruise company wins as they get money they would otherwise not have got, the cargo company does not have to charter its own boat, and energy is saved that reduces carbon emissions.

How to Have a Green Holiday this Year

October 30, 2009 by Mickey Jacks

A mountain of Christmas gifts and goods make their way out of and into homes each Christmas season. Regrettably, not long after the festivities subside, many of those well-meaning gifts move rapidly on to mounds of landfill.

Slowing the migration is as easy as setting your family the Green Christmas Challenge to send as little as possible to landfill this Christmas. Inspired by the target of a approximately empty wheelie bin, you will all make decisions that generate less waste.

Many actions help with celebrating a green Christmas, like opting for locally-grown foods to reduce food miles, switching to LED eco Christmas lights and donating gifts to charities. The massive amount of food, plastic and non-recyclable waste is the chief environmental problem, but it is a simple one for households to take on.

Sit the team down before Christmas and speak about methods of reuse, reduce and recycle. Here’s some ideas to get you started

Good for the environment plastic-free picnics

Disposable plastic plates and cups are created from petrochemicals, so pollution is made in their manufacture and when thrown-away they sit in landfill forever. Select reusable plates that you wash up or use palm leaf plates, a stylish plant alternative. They add a chic good for the environment style to your festive table and can be put onto your garden as mulch, instead of in the bin.

Trim a living tree When Santa arrives in his carbon-neutral sleigh, surprise him with a live Australian Wollemi pine tree. This recently discovered prehistoric tree is now for sale in nurseries. A potted Wollemi can grow with your family to be trimmed year after year. Or, why not a tradition to find a lovely Eucalyptus branch that can be composted when the Christmas festivities are over.

Wrap it again

A fantastic stretch the budget and save piles of waste is to wrap presents in newspaper, magazines and even junk mail. For kids use the comics, for car lovers use the motoring pages. wrapping, place gifts inside reusable shopping bags, or sew cloth bags from festive Christmas material that your family can re-tie with ribbon every year. For an extra special Green Christmas touch, Earth Greetings make pleasurable post consumer waste wrapping paper with Australian Christmas designs printed with vegetable inks.

Detour past the bin

Ask, is this Christmas gift end up in the bin within a few weeks? If yes, opt for something else. The old saying quality not quantity is a good friend of the planet. Even the cheapest items use the planet’s limited resources, energy and water to manufacture. Instead of buy a risky gift, consider a gift voucher or make a donation to a charity on behalf of the person. Should you receive an unsuitable gift, pass it straight on to a charity like the Salvos.

A green Christmas gift for your garden

Food scraps make up a huge portion of rubbish and once in landfill they generate methane, a concentrated greenhouse gas. Compost at home instead and turn leftovers into fertiliser for your garden. The Bokashi composting bin is a popular system that sits conveniently in your kitchen.

Packaging-free paradise

Picture a paradise where Christmas morning is free of mounds of discarded plastic packaging. It just takes a little bit more thought and effort. Locally made and hand-made Christmas gifts are to be over-packaged. A trip to the local Farmer’s Markets will also assist you stock up on fresh festive food with minimal packaging.

Rather than talking rubbish; this Christmas, your family will soon be asking is this for landfill, recycling or composting? And the joy of attaining your challenge will bring good tidings to all.

Biome Eco Stores is a chic retail outlet with a conscience. Firmly committed to eco friendly principles, Biome offers a unique and meaningful green Christmas collection for gifts and decoration.

Fresh or Artificial Christmas Wreaths?

September 21, 2009 by Maggie Krafts

Those of us that are concerned about the environment want to make sure that we are buying and producing green products. Consumers are conscientiously doing their best to purchase products that use renewable resources. When it comes to deciding between a fresh Christmas wreath or on an artificial wreath, most people are choosing real evergreen wreaths. You probably know that artificial wreaths are made from plastics and other petroleum based products, and you also know that petroleum is not a renewable resource.

The artificial wreaths most likely will end up in a landfill and they are not biodegradable. In addition, most artificial wreaths are made overseas and so even more petroleum is used to ship the artificial wreaths. There are many more green reasons to buy a fresh evergreen wreath. They can be recycled by removing the fir from the wreath rings for a potpourri.

There are also many free recycling programs where the greens will be chipped and used for mulch, another plus for the environment. Our boxes and bags are made from recycled materials as well. Since 1976, we have shipped noble fir wreaths worldwide and we have studied environmental issues. We are constantly learning better ways to protect Mother Earth and thus updating our methods of production.

Fresh evergreen wreathes are a renewable resource. We do not cut down any trees to make our Christmas wreaths. In the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, we harvest the tips of the branches, and this actually promotes the growth of the trees. Trimming the branches of the noble fir trees is actually beneficial to the trees and thus great for the environment. The aromatic noble fir trees from Washington state are the longest lasting evergreens. These majestic trees are natures way of fighting against global warming.

Trees take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and release oxygen. The process of producing plastic, artificial wreaths burns fossil fuels while adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Its a great system.

Knowing that fresh Christmas wreaths are recyclable, renewable and less of a contributor to global warming, those who are concerned about Mother Earth are choosing a fresh Christmas wreath.

Holidays Are Great, Why Not Try An Africa Safari

June 21, 2009 by Gogreen

A Safari holidays would be absolutely amazing? Just imagine it, sitting in the jeep being told what all the wonderful things around you and going in search of amazing wildlife. If you did happen to meet a lion or a tiger, you can be sure it will be a great story to tell your friends.

Safari holidays are notoriously known for being very expensive; some even over five thousand pounds. In saying that you will have the time of your life. Now that the global economy has been hit a little hard, although your spending money has come down a bit, so has the cost of these holidays. When you are preparing yourself for this holiday, just be sure to check that you have all the essentials, like a mosquito net and that you have had your jabs.

Safari holidays offer us the wildlife up close and personal. We can enjoy the lands of Africa and meet all of nature’s predators and prey. Safaris are one of the most unique holidays to go on. We all want to do something that our friends and family haven’t necessarily done, and doing this is more than likely to be one of those things.

If you want to take a risk and try something exciting this is definitely one of those things to do. Kenya holidays and Tanzania holidays, both offer safari locations. Nature will be up close. Safari holidays in general are run really well, and everyone seems to have a great time. The main testimonial that people seem to give after a Safari is that it is “unforgettable”. Zambia holidays also offer a Safari trip for it’s visitors, so you don’t have to go on two week safari, just try a one day trip.

So go on Safari and delve into the territory of the Lion. Enjoying yourself is one hundred percent guaranteed. If you are going on Safari make sure that you check to see what you need to take with you. This is the experience of kings, and now it’s available for us all to take part in.

Need The Perfect Gift For A Hard-to-Please Teen? Try A Black Belt

June 20, 2009 by Gogreen

Oh, I know you can’t give someone a black belt, any more than you can give them a high school diploma or a college degree. But you can give them a nudge in the right direction along with the financial resources to make the journey. And the martial arts journey is a secret dream of a surprising number of teens and preteens. So if you’re looking for the perfect gift for a hard-to-please teen or ‘tween’; if you want something they’ll like which will also help them (and maybe you!) through a tough stage of their life, give them a martial arts membership!

It doesn’t need to be extravagant, such as paying a whole year’s dues. Three months, one month, or even one or two introductory lessons will do. After all, the quest for a black belt will take a few years, and can only be sustained through the internal motivation of the individual. No external motivation is going to last. But if the way is mapped out, if they are gently bumped into taking the first step, and if the destination is made tangible, they are more likely to begin. The complex chore of finding a school, talking to the adults there, breaking the news to parents or friends, and then getting the money together, can make it too overwhelming a task to attempt. If all this groundwork is done for them, though, a teen is much more likely at least to give it a try.

And there are solid reasons that go far deeper than the clichéd list we’ve all heard: discipline, self-defense, higher self-esteem, etc. Yes, with a good school and instructor, these can be true. But why? How? Here are seven can’t-miss benefits of the martial arts.

Can’t-Miss Benefit #1: A healthy alternative to electronics
Martial arts practice is a fun, healthy, natural hobby. It makes a good alternative to kids living inside a video game, computer, television screen or cell phone. The martial arts get kids up, moving, and noticing the world around them (actually a requirement, since awareness is 90% of self-defense). I won’t trot out the statistics and details about child and adolescent illnesses, as in the areas of obesity, diabetes, ADD/ADHD, etc. You’ve heard them. But whatever concerns you may have for a teen’s health—or their future health given present habits—practicing the martial arts is a good antidote. Martial arts practice (even home practice): helps to even out moods, especially important for teens who feel emotional highs and lows so passionately, and whose hormones are often raging (MA also produces endorphins); speeds up metabolism, which burns excess calories; acts as a natural anti-drug/alcohol agent (it’s impossible to advance much in the arts when doing drugs or drinking); builds flexibility, endurance, and strength; increases red blood cell production; and lowers blood pressure. And this is only the tip of the iceberg.

Can’t-Miss Benefit #2: Increased respect for self and others
Many kids, for a plethora of reasons, don’t believe they are entitled to be respected and appreciated just for who they are—for being themselves. Almost all kids have been teased by peers at some point about a ‘flaw’, which turns into self-consciousness and can grow out of all proportion in the kid’s own mind. This lack of self-respect and self-appreciation if left unchecked over time can manifest as either anger, or feelings of insufficiency. Through good martial arts instruction in a positive atmosphere, teens learn that they are neither more nor less ‘flawed’ than anyone else. This healthy sense of self, that to be normal is not to be perfect, is an important element in the development and maturation of teens and preteens.

Can’t-Miss Benefit #3: Learning to earn their way
There is a dangerous trend underway in many kids’ basic outlook on life: that they are entitled to something for little or nothing. This attitude may be caused either by things coming to them too easily, or by things being too difficult. Perhaps they may feel like failures in one or more areas of their young lives: school, socially, sports, dating, or maybe embarrassment over some family or home situation (e.g., not as rich as the ‘rich’ kids; not as poor as the ‘cool’ kids). Over time, I’ve become convinced that the more kids find themselves feeling on the outs from success, the more shortcuts will seem acceptable, even normal; and then the more easily they will give up on earning their way. I believe that as these teens work toward and earn martial arts achievements, they learn they can be successful the old fashioned way. They don’t need shortcuts. They are capable. They learn to earn their way, and this instills confidence and pride of achievement.

Can’t-Miss Benefit # 4: A rite of passage
Many indigenous cultures have rituals established whereby young people can prove they have earned the right to be seen as adults. Our ‘advanced’ society has a gap here, especially for those teens extremely at risk of not transitioning into mainstream society. That is, those with little hope of on-time high school graduation, no vocational apprenticeship or schooling awaiting them, or little chance of or desire for college entrance, also have little hope of proving their worth to peers and adults. That is, they have no access to a culturally approved rite of passage into adulthood. This creates a vacuum during a very critical time/stage of life. Unfortunately, those who can find no traditional, socially-acceptable way to make this passage, may turn to such things as tagging/party crews or even gangs (with their initiation ceremonies), girls to pregnancy (proof of womanhood), boys to impregnating someone (proof of manhood), and either gender to ‘anti-approval’ (vandalism, wreaking havoc in classes or at home, body piercings/ tattoos/bizarre hair and clothing styles). Earning their way up the belt ranking system—ideally all the way to black belt—offers a powerful rite-of-passage alternative for our teens and tweens.

Can’t-Miss Benefit #5: Team work and etiquette
Many kids have had to scrabble for respect from peers, have been teased as mentioned earlier, have had to compromise their true feelings in order to fit in, or have struggled and perhaps been made to feel inadequate in school. Any one of these situations can cause them by the preteen/teen years to have adopted an ‘each one for himself/herself, and forget the rest’ survival mentality. Martial arts instruction and practice generally requires either a whole-class or two-person team format. In both cases, each student necessarily takes responsibility for the well-being of classmates and partners. To do less when practicing potentially dangerous techniques, would put others—who have become their friends—at risk. Wholesome martial arts instruction naturally counteracts any me-first attitude.

Can’t-Miss Benefit #6: Increased safety in a dangerous world
While there is obviously nothing that can guarantee that our kids will always be safe and protected, the one who is better prepared will better respond to a sudden, dangerous situation, or even better handle a verbal assault or provocation. Stories abound of teenagers, many of them girls, who have fought off grown men attempting to attack them or family members. Again, this is not guaranteed to happen, but it is much more likely for those who have trained and prepared, mentally and physically.

Sure-fire Benefit #7: Personal empowerment
The martial arts paradox is that those who know how to fight rarely need to do so. Learning to defend oneself takes away the need to ‘prove’ ones toughness on the street, in the classroom, or at home. Learning martial arts is a counterweight to violence. In my almost 20 years of working with kids full time, I’ve found that bullies are often past victims of bullying; abusers are past victims of abuse; etc. So, we can promote the health of the kid who becomes a martial artist, as well as making them a beacon of anti-violence for their peers. In a sense, the presence of someone who refuses to become either bully or bullied, is a powerful force for their friends, acquaintances, siblings and classmates.

A personal note from my wife: How to find the right school/instructor
This topic really deserves a separate article, but my wife, an early-childhood specialist concerned for all children and parents, gently hinted that it would be less than helpful to leave you without some guidelines on how to choose a martial arts program. I have studied four Asian arts seriously over a dozen years in probably 8-10 settings, and have seen the best and the worst of schools and instructors. Here is how I would distill that experience and advise you to begin.
• How do you feel when you walk out the door of the studio for the first time—not what do you think, but how do you feel? Is it the right one or not?
• Is the would-be instructor for your teen a good fit? Or is he/she too demanding? Too sloppy? Too macho? Too competitive? Too young/old?
• Are the promises they make realistic, or are they trying too hard to sell you? And how long have they been there? You don’t want a place that closes its doors as your teen is halfway to black belt.
• Is there a good balance between teaching self-defense (will it work?) and having fun?
• Will it promote health if your teen continues for years, even decades, or will it wear down joints—is it too youth-oriented, too dependent on external strength/size, or is it an art that can be practiced by anyone for a lifetime?

A kid’s thrill at having a chance at a life-long dream—earning a black belt—may be the solution to your gift-giving dilemma, and your gift may have far-reaching benefits for someone you care about. I hope that if you’ve been wrestling with what to give a hard-to-please teen or tween, this article may help you to nudge them toward beginning a lifelong journey to better health, self-awareness and understanding, compassion and confidence.

Easy Ways To Save When Travelling

June 19, 2009 by Gogreen

Are you and your family taking a cheap foreign holiday this year or are you taking a staycation at home? The downturn in the economy has resulted in a huge fall in demand for holidays abroad, but it has also meant there are some absolute bargains to be had.

Travelling with your whole family in tow is anything but cheap. And if you are flying abroad, maybe taking advantage of a cheap holiday offer, you’ll have the added expenses that inevitably occur at the airport. If you have ever spent a few hours at Heathrow you will already know how the various airport restaurants can quickly empty your pockets for a little refreshment.

The trick, if there is such a thing, with budget travelling is to anticipate as many of your expenses as you possibly can and then look at ways to lessen these costs. When travelling children there are always the unforeseen expenses and demands for ‘I want one of those’ that must be contended with.

One key thing you can do is get your money changed before getting to the airport. Generally, the money exchange facilities at airports don’t provide the highest rate of exchange. Also, find out how much it will cost to get cash from your bank while you are on holiday. It may prove more economical to take some travellers checks.

One of the biggest drains on your cash resources, while at the airport, is likely to be feeding your children. The thing to do is to take food and refreshments with you. Why not take a few of their favourite things and have a picnic in the departure lounge. They will have fun and you will save a small fortune.

Do the same for your partner and yourself and whatever you do, don’t go buying beer and alcohol from the airport bars. Their prices are always extortionate and a couple of drinks will set you back enough to finance a new car.

Taking your family to the airport by public transport can be impossibly expensive. Many people travelling with their families will opt to drive their own cars. This raises the problem of Heathrow Parking limitations. The answer here is to research parking prices in advance and book early. The earlier you book your Heathrow parking space the cheaper it will be.

Another option that can be good if you have an early morning flight, or if you have to travel some distance to the airport, is to book yourself into a Heathrow Airport Hotel for the night before your flight. This may seem like a massive indulgence, but many Heathrow hotels include airport car parking into the price of their hotel rooms. You may be surprised to find that you can often find a Heathrow hotel room with car parking included for less than it would have cost for parking alone.

If you can anticipate where you are likely to spend your cash when headed off on holiday you will give yourself a good chance of coming up with a cheaper alternative, which will give you a much happier holiday.

You May Go Places, Explore The Globe, Take Out A Holiday Loan!

June 12, 2009 by Gogreen

Certain people say riches cannot buy happiness. But at times it really does. In fact, will even dare to say that wealth can buy you a great deal of contentment. If you want to take your family out on a holiday journey, you will need money. Your reserves may not be adequate to cover your holiday fixed cost. A holiday package does not only cover up the cost of tickets but also other travel fixed cost. You can finance your holiday expenses by taking out a holiday loan . The amount of loan depends upon the length of your break. It also depends upon your holiday destination and what you may want to do in the course of your stay. As for me for instance, I am a basketball player and I want to be working on growing my vertical leap while I am on holidays! It is accurate, I call it a vacation but I can not completely stay out of my best things in life!

If you want a small sum of money to cover your travel expenses, then you can take out a personal loan. Personal loans are typically unsecured and bear a lofty rate of interest. There is no need to offer a security to acquire an unsecured loan. An additional pleasant thing about a personal loan is that you do not need to cite any reason for availing the loan. In spite of its sharp rate of interest, a personal holiday loan has turn out to be very admired. Numerous people take out a personal holiday loan and reimburse it within a short period of time.

You can go for a secured vacation loan if you are a landowner. You can use your residence a as security to obtain a secured holiday loan. There are several benefits of secured loans. You can get a big amount of money. A secured holiday loan will allow you to pay less interest and little monthly installments. An added type of secured loans is home equity loans. A house equity holiday loan can help you pay for your holiday. You can use it to discharge the equity tied up in your house.

Having a bad credit history can be a difficulty when you request for a holiday loan. Many lenders are unenthusiastic to give loans to borrowers with a weak credit score. However, you should not give up the idea of taking out a holiday loan if you have a bad credit history. There are still many lenders who offer bad credit holiday loans. Bad credit loans carry a high rate of interest. As a result, it is sensible to pull out a secured bad credit loan to keep the interest rate at a near to the ground level.

Great luck with your vacation and I wish you the best in all your holiday events. As for me, I just hope for one occurrence: increase vertical jump and I suppose I will achieve it.

Safaris Are Best Observed In The Serengeti, The Most Beautiful National Park In Africa

June 4, 2009 by Gogreen

The Serengeti is a beautiful and extremely diverse national park. It is located in north western Tanzania. People come to the Serengeti just to marvel at it’s land, animals and general beauty. Let’s take a look at some of the both the unknown and more famous points of Tanzania’s wonderland.

The word Serengeti is actually derived from the Maasai language meaning “endless plains”. The Maasai were a very strong and respected people that populated the Serengeti and when Europeans first visited these lands, left the animals alone in the Serengeti to avoid aggravating the local people. The term Serengeti fits this national park very well because it has an area of just over 30,000 kilometres squared.

The main event that the Serengeti is famous for will be the Circular Migration. Called many other things, this Migration occurs every year from late July through to early October. Going in search of the rains that travel up through the Serengeti, 2 million herbivores will cross through the Mara River. They continue up into the Masai Mara reserve, a popular destination for Kenya holidays and safaris.

The Serengeti also has its very own active volcano called Ol Doinyo Lengai. This volcano still erupts sending forth clouds of ash which disrupt plant growth across the land. In the Serengeti there are over five hundred and fifty Avifauna, also known as its geographical bird species.

If you are interested in going on a safari, this is one of the places that should be at the top of your list. Some people may want to see the Circular Migration, so you need to try and arrive at the ideal times, being august and September.

So why don’t you leave home and embark on an adventure on Tanzania holidays or Zambia holidays, you won’t be at all disappointed.

Royal Holiday Hotels – Mexico Scam

May 7, 2009 by Gogreen

As most of us know, the timeshare world has often been touted since it started in the 70s as a world of scam artists. Well here we are in 2009 and nothing seems to have changed.

Once company based in Mexico that operates as Royal Holiday Vacation Club offers hotels around the world based on a system of points. However, their way of selling these points to unsuspecting travelers to Mexico has often left many vacationers with more that a sour taste of Tequila and lemon in their mouth. The situation got so bad that the ABC program 20/20 investigated. Here are some of their results.

What´s the secret to Royal Holiday´s Success?

“20/20″ interviewed a cross-section of an ever increasing number of members who say Royal Holiday misled them about the club, how the club operates, and the availability of vacations that they originally signed up for. Most say the only thing royal about their membership was the way they were ripped off.

John and Robin Chomko, who are from the St Louis area, joined in the Dominican Republic in 2006. “They’ll tell you anything,” John says of the Royal Holiday salespeople. “They’ll lie, I mean, they lied completely to us.”

Karen M: “We bought into this on vacation at the Crystal Palace in Nassau Bahamas, in April of 2003. When we arrived home we canceled it. It was within the 7 days and we sent the certified letter as instructed when we called. Now 2 and 1/2 years later, we received a letter from a collection agency. They are rude and call us liars. I have the proof and they don’t want to hear it or see it. They just want the money…”

The stories don´t seem to stop coming. Indeed there are even websites dedicated to raising awareness nowadays and perhaps previously people felt ashamed to admit they´d been suckered – well, not any more. Many people now are telling their stories – some more revealing than the last!

So How Are People Suckered Into Buying?

It starts at the airport and follows potential buyers across Cancun, Acapulco or many other desirable Mexican coastal resorts. When “20/20″ traveled to Cancun in January, producers found a Royal Holiday sales presentation with offers of free meals, free tickets to events, a spa day and other enticements at the airport. On accepting the offer of a free breakfast at the Hyatt Cancun Caribe hotel, a producer asked a Royal Holiday worker whether the sales presentation would include high-pressure tactics or hard selling. The employee said emphatically no.

However the “20/20″ producers who were posing as tourists were insistently solicited by Royal Holiday representatives bearing gifts. During the first cup of coffee at breakfast, the saleswoman — who sat right down at the table to eat with the producers — began serving a classic high-pressure technique: the limited time offer. “If you join the club today, you have incentives, only today,” she said. “If you wanted to come back tomorrow we cannot.”

The BBB rates Royal Holiday with an “F”

Royal Holiday says 97 percent of its approximately 65,000 members never complain. But Mexico’s consumer protection agency, Procuraduria Federal del Consumidor, or Profeco, says Royal Holiday has 1,800 complaints. Asked to comment, Royal Holiday referred 20/20 to its Mexico City lawyer, Agustin Garcia. 20/20 pointed out to Garcia that in 2005, Royal Holiday had 282 complaints; 506 complaints in 2006 and 761 complaints in 2007.

The Federal Trade Commission says the travel, vacations and timeshare industry was in its top 10 complaint categories in 2007. And it says complaints about Royal Holiday are also piling up at the Better Business Bureau of South East Florida and the Caribbean, located in West Palm Beach, Florida where Better Business Bureau Senior Vice President Carol Venello says the pattern is of members reporting high-pressure sales, misrepresentation and failure to disclose conditions of the offer.

The Better Business Bureau gives Royal Holiday its lowest rating, a mark understandable in Spanish or English: an F. Royal Holiday’s lawyer Garcia acknowledged to ABC News’ Jim Avila that “F’s not good, even in elementary school.”

With that kind of complaint record… how do the salespeople get tourists to bite? Long of West Virginia says, “They are good. I will give them that. They are good.”

Canadian Tourism Organisation Shamed For Fake Footage

April 29, 2009 by Gogreen

The video was included in a package commissioned by the tourist board in Alberta to help promote and boast visitor numbers. It was intended to show the best features of the Alberta province in Canada and increase levels of canada holidays in the region. However, when a Canadian man called Peter Bailey saw the film and tried to track down the location to do a bit of sailing, it soon dawned on him that he would have a problem. His initial thoughts were that the beach was on the edge of one of Canada’s vast lakes but a North Sea coast in England turned out to be nearer the truth. armed with the knowledge that Alverta was a landlocked region and wad a good 350 miles from any seas, Bailey sent his findings of the the relevant people.

When Peter approached the Northumberland Tourist Board they instantly saw the funny side of the matter. ” we think its rather funny – Canada trying to sell its landlocked provinces as coastal resorts” stated Sheelagh Caygill. A large proportion of the people of Northumberland were said the be honoured rather than being put out. commenting that they are flattered that Canada consider the area good enough for their film.

Bailey also took his findings to officials in Ottawa and they took more of a defensive stance. It was used only to “symbolise the fact Albertans are a worldly people” argued a spokesman.Tom Olson who looks after media relations for the Prime Minister suggested “There’s no attempt to mislead here. The images were utilised because they represented the tone and mood that we were after.”

Spokesman have stated that although the English part of the film will remain, there is now a footer note included that credits the UK tourist board. The situation has left a number of senior officials slight red-faced but they it will not be occurring in future. Among other promotional sets that Canada has recently released include one detailing alaskan cruises so there will surely be people keeping an keen eye out for passing flamingos in the footage

Sinking Boats – 5 Tips For Survival

April 25, 2009 by Gogreen

Boats sink. Granted, it thankfully happens a lot less these days but they do still happen all around the world, even on five star cruises. It worth getting an understanding of how to survive a sinking, as there is a much greater chance of this happening than say being involved in a plane crash. Here are five key points that are worth learning

Life jacket. If you do one thing to help save your life, make sure it is wearing a life jacket. more people owe their lives to this piece of equipment than any other water safety item. The two main reasons are that on a sinking ship when you are very disorientated, a life jacket will always pull you towards the surface. Secondly, no one can swim for ever and so once your energy is depleted a life jacket will stop you from going under

Stay calm. Most ship sinking survivors claim that staying calm was the reason they stayed alive. When you are in a state of panic you make hasty decisions and burn up much need energy. Boats no not just sink in minutes. Most of the time they take a good few hours so spend a little time calming yourself down and thinking through your actions carefully

Stay high. When you know that a boat is heading towards to bottom, being below the deck is not where you want to be. There are a lot more hazards below deck and you can easily get trapped in rooms or pockets of water. make your way up to the deck of the ship and do not move from there

Swim away from ship. There are have been tests that disprove the theory that a sinking ship will pull you down with it. However, there is no way anyone can replicate the scenario of large ship going down and survives of such events have claimed this does happen. If you’re not the type to risk it, swim around fifty to sixty metres from the boat when it is sinking to ensure your safety

Stick together. Once in the water, if not in a lifeboat, make sure you huddle together in a group. This will help keep everyone warm, will deter any predators as they rarely attack big objects and will help you to be spotted be passing ships or rescue parties.

If you’re looking for very safe cruises go for river cruise or for a cruise agent with high saftey records look at Peter Deilmann Cruise Company

THE GREEN POUND

December 7, 2008 by admin

Shopping doesn’t have to be an entirely selfish pursuit, contrary to the rather clichéd belief widely expressed in the media. Of course it’s nice to spoil yourself every once in a while (but not every day, or it stops being a treat and becomes an addiction), but in this day and age shopping also offers many opportunities to have a positive impact on the environment. This begins with the obvious – purchasing environmentally-friendly products which have been produced ethically, organic food or energy-saving items, but includes other aspects in terms of packaging, transport and lifestyle.

If you have shopped in a supermarket recently, then it is likely that you have encountered the concept of a “bagless checkout” – where once you have put your items through the checkout you do not put them into readily supplied plastic bags, but into a “Bag For Life” (something which has been around for some time now) or into a bag that you yourself have brought. It is now fashionable to take with you a fabric bag, lessening the need for a handful of plastic bags which don’t biodegrade when disposed of, causing a real problem in the environment. For the shopper a bag like this has the added convenience of being easier to carry – it can be slung over your shoulder, ending the problem of heavily-filled, thin-strapped plastic bags which cut into your hands.

Many people now are doing their shopping on the Internet. This is helpful to the environment in a number of ways, from something as simple as grocery shopping – multiple deliveries in a single van is much better than several individual cars sitting in traffic jams en route for the supermarket – to one-click shopping at online stores which saves the customer a potential wild goose chase to find a single item and may well necessitate them starting and stopping their car several times in a few hours. This also allows the customer time to consider their purchase, being a much less rushed process. While many people complain about the expense of green products, being able to shop around on the Internet allows them to find a better deal – better for them and better for the world.

EAT YOUR GREENS

December 7, 2008 by admin

Eating Green isn’t all about organics and vegetarianism, although these do, of course, play a part for many people. There is more to it than that, and you can make a big difference to how Green you are by making certain simple changes in your eating and shopping habits. Many of these changes are hardly noticeable, and some will surprise you with how much you prefer them. If you shop around, you will also find that eating and drinking green can be easier on the pocket than the alternative.

The first thing to do if you are concerned about helping the environment is think about where your food comes from – and I mean that in more than one sense. If you shop in supermarkets, for example, you should take a close look at the packaging on what you’re buying. Firstly, how much packaging is there? Often supermarkets will package goods in lots of plastic wrapping – how often, for example, do you see a packet of tomatoes on a plastic tray, wrapped around with a few feet of cling film? This is wholly unnecessary, takes up space, uses energy and has very little practical benefit.

Another consideration ought to be where in the world your food was grown. Some fruit and veg are not grown nearby and if you need to buy – for example – a pineapple then it is hard to find locally-sourced tropical fruit if you live closer to the North Pole than the Equator. If possible, however, it is extremely beneficial to buy locally-grown fruit and veg. The reasons for this are simple. Firstly, if potatoes have just travelled two-and-a-half miles in a van, their impact on the environment is much less than if they’ve travelled from overseas by air or ship. Chances are you won’t have to pay as much for them, as well.

Buying food grown locally needn’t be any hassle. If you have a farm shop near you then why not check out their deals – the relatively low overheads these shops have enable them to keep prices low. If you don’t have a farm shop, then your local greengrocer will have a wide selection of locally-sourced fruit and veg. Next time you’re in, ask them – it’s better for you, better for your wallet and better for the planet.

“We’re All Going On A Green Holiday…”

December 7, 2008 by admin

When it comes to going on holiday, no-one wants to compromise on comfort. Having worked for months to even afford to go away in the first place, many people will have only one consideration when it comes to setting off – “how quickly can I get there?”

Often this consideration results in getting on a plane and flying somewhere hot. Can you really be bothered with environmental matters when sometimes you’ll only get between ten days and a fortnight off all year? With so little time off, priorities may become skewed, or at least compromised in some way. Obviously sunning oneself by a pool can be a very attractive proposition when you’ve been hunched over a desk for the preceding eight months.  Getting there as quickly as possible is also to be desired.

As our world develops technologically, it is getting smaller by the day. Obviously flying is the quickest way to get to another place.  That it is not an ecologically desirable way is not in dispute, but some airlines are looking at ways to either decrease or offset the impact that the aviation industry is having on the planet. Some remain nakedly unconcerned about their own impact, but negative exposure is leading to these airlines suffering in terms of sales, and will hopefully, eventually lead to them mending their ways.  But the fact remains that flying anywhere, as well as not being cheap, will hurt the environment more than any other method of travel.

Does this mean that you must always holiday close to home if you want to save money and the planet?  Of course it doesn’t.  You can travel long distances at reasonable speeds and in genuine comfort, while saving a little bit of money into the bargain. Coach journeys, if you have a few days extra, are a great way to travel and you’ll see more of the world from ground level than from a plane.  As international rail links improve, the intrepid traveller can go by train from the North of Scotland to parts of Asia, although admittedly you will need to leave yourself a bit of time for that!
