The US military knows that its branches must revamp their thinking about how to engage in “the theater of war” in the new, post-Cold War world of the 21st century. One thing that the military leaders stress is the desire for the forces deployed in the theater to be able to be more energy-independent. Currently united states military has policies and procedures in place to interact with allies or sympathetic local populaces to help it is forces in the field get their needed energy and clean water when engaged in a foreign military campaign. However, this isn’t wholly reliable, as the United states might well find itself facing unilateral military activities, or have itself in a situation where its allies cannot help it with the resources it needs to conduct its military actions successfully.

The united states military is very interested in certain alternative energies that, with the right research and development technologically, can make it energy independent, or at least a great deal more so, on the battlefield. One important thing that greatly interests the military along these lines is the development of small nuclear reactors, which could be portable, for producing theater-local electricity. The military is impressed with how clean-burning nuclear reactors are and how energy efficient they’re. Making them portable for the typical warfare of today’s highly mobile, small-scaled military operations is something they’re researching. One of the most prominent thing that the US military thinks these small nuclear reactors would be helpful for involves the removal of hydrogen (for fuel cell) from seawater. It also thinks that converting seawater to hydrogen fuel in this way would have less negative impact on the environment than its current practices of remaining supplied out in the field.

Seawater is, in fact, the military’s highest interest when it comes to the matter of alternative energy supply. Seawater can be endlessly “mined” for hydrogen, which in turn powers advanced fuel cells. Using OTEC, seawater can also be endlessly converted into desalinated, potable water. Potable water and hydrogen for power are two of the things that a near-future deployed military force will require most of all.

In the cores of nuclear reactors-which as stated above are devices highly interesting, in portable form, to the US military-we encounter temperatures greater than 1000 degrees Celsius. If this level of temperature is mixed with a thermo-chemical water-splitting procedure, we have on our hands the most efficient means of breaking down water into its component parts, that are molecular hydrogen and oxygen.

The minerals and salts that are contained in seawater would need to be extracted via a desalination process in order to make the way clear for the water-splitting process. These could then be utilized, such as in vitamins or in salt shakers, or just sent back to the ocean (recycling). Using the power of nuclear reactors to extract this hydrogen from the sea, in order to then input that into fuel cells to power advanced airplanes, tanks, ground vehicles, and the like, is clearly high on the R & D priority list of the military.

The Growth Of Wind Power Systems

August 18, 2010 by Adriana Noton

The whole World is realizing the need to look at alternative ways to generate energy. In some countries they are becoming popular, but Canada has been making use of wind power systems for years. It has become widely accepted within the local and business communities as the means of generating their power requirements.

Canada has been very proactive in how it has been seeking to use the wealth of the natural resources it has. It knows it has to supplement the power generated by the more traditional methods of hydro power stations and fossil fueled power stations.

Using wind energy to power wind turbines to generate electricity is fantastic for the environment. With this as one of the major factors, the Canadian Wind Energy Association has made a strategy that will greatly increase the energy produced using the power of the wind to 55,000 MW by 2025. And the wind is a resource will not diminish and need to be replaced in the future.

Wind power used to be the most popular in Ontario, but recently other cities, including Quebec and Alberta, are using wind turbines to generate small quantities of energy for their residential neighborhoods and businesses as well. By the end of the last century and beginning of this century, all the provinces had looked into using some form of wind power to supplement traditional forms of electricity and fuels.

Only one province, that of British Columbia, does not have a facility to source their power from the wind. But they are now taking steps to catch up with the rest of the country, and are going to be purchasing 300 MW of renewable wind-sourced electricity in the near future. It will not be long until the whole population of Canada can benefit from this renewable energy source.

Though there are all these plans and strategies in place to adopt the Utopian world of living a life sourced by renewable energy, compared with the use of traditional sources wind power is currently only supplying a very small amount. The wind farms currently in operation generate approximately 2300 MW. But this amount will increase as the number of wind farms grows.

In the United States the border cities of Chicago and Detroit are also taking an interest in what is happening in Canada. They are giving a lot more thought to the use of renewable energies, including the wind, to power the large number of factories in their area. The benefits to their budgets and the environment would be incredible. Even if relying totally on wind power to fuel the cities is not practical, there is also the possibility of developing hybrid projects in order to lessen the drain on fossil fuels.

The benefits of utilizing wind powered green energy is not just for local governments and businesses, domestic users can benefit from this trend of using alternative energy sources as well (such as the Feed in Tarriff program). Residents can buy equipment to generate their own power from personal turbines. A small turbine will cost about $5000 and will generate something in the region of 25% of their energy requirement. If you have the room for something a bit larger then maybe you could get a turbine that can produce 50% of your energy needs, but only if you are prepared to pay $7000 for the privilege. Even an outlay of %600 will get you a machine that will produce 200 watts, ideal for that off-grid cabin in the woods.

It’s possible to run your business through more innovative ways by utilizing inventions like wind power and other alternative energy solutions that make your process more environmental and efficient!

Global Warming

August 10, 2010 by Dr Aaron Waterman

Global warming is one of the “hottest” issues nowadays. The current climate change is the worst yet to happen. Global warming is an overall increase in world temperature which is attributed to the increasing number of greenhouse gases trapped in the atmosphere. Searching an alternative energy source is considered a way of reducing the toxic emissions.

Greenhouse gases can be produced both by natural and industrial processes. The most abundant greenhouse gases on earth’s atmosphere are water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone and CFCs.

There are several sources of greenhouse gases. Burning of fossil fuels and deforestation lead to higher concentration of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Without the trees and plants to take in the carbon dioxide emitted by burning fossil fuels, natural gas and petroleum products, all of the CO2 emitted stays in the atmosphere.

Also the use of CFCs or chlorofluorocarbons in refrigeration systems and in fire suppression systems and other manufacturing processes also increase the greenhouse content of our atmosphere. While the use of non-organic fertilizers in agriculture also lead to higher nitrous oxide concentrations, another greenhouse gas.

In the United States, greenhouse gas emissions mainly come from the use of fossil fuels as energy source. Approximately 82 percent of the greenhouse gas emission in the United States in 2006 came from the combustion of coal, natural gas and petroleum (United States Energy Information Administration). Meanwhile in Asia, Chine is expected to increase its emission of greenhouse gas because of the construction of old-fashioned power plants in its internal provinces. Currently, the carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere are the highest in 150,000 years. The 1990s was most likely the warmest decade in history, while 1998 was the warmest year (Greenpeace).

Not controlling the greenhouse gas being emitted by human activity can increase climate change the next hundred years that will be much faster than anything known and recorded in history. There are necessary steps to be undertaken to control the toxic emission that will soon be killing us.

To minimize the consumption of oil, petroleum and other fossil fuel, we should use energy efficiently. Energy that we use should be generated from renewable energy source, which would mean harnessing the natural energy from the sun, winds, crops, tides and waves.

Green energy is another term used to describe sources of energy that are considered to be environmentally friendly, which is also similar to the renewable sources of energy.

There are numerous ways of generating electricity and energy from renewable and natural sources that generate clean and safe energy. Wind, sun, and heat can generate electricity for less price and less carbon emission than those of coal and even gas.

Shifting the world’s attention to alternative fuel source other than relying on fossil fuel is among the solutions in resolving the drastic climate change. Greenpeace cited that with renewable energy and using it smartly, can deliver half of the world’s energy needs by 2050. Greenpeace also cited that it is feasible to reduce carbon dioxide emission to almost 50 percent within the next 43 years.

Governments are taking steps to use and tap alternative energy sources as main source of energy. The European Union leaders made an agreement in March 2007 to ensure that 20 percent of their nation’s energy should come from renewable fuels by 2020. This is part of their effort to cut carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gas. There are even governments offering incentives to their residents who are using green energy.

Alternative energy source may not be the only way to reduce the greenhouse emission that human activity produce. There are simple ways in which we can do to contribute in reducing toxic gas emission and mitigate global warming.

Conservation of our natural resources is also important to slow the trend of global warming. Saving your rainwater runoff can save on your water bill. Save your water and buy a tank at Adelaide Rainwater Tanks or Victoria Rainwater Tanks Check here for free reprint licence: Global Warming.

PV Solar – One Of The Most Powerful Forms Of Renewable Energy

August 1, 2010 by Clinton Thomas

In order to convert solar radiation to direct current electricity, it requires the use of PVs, or photovoltaic material. Many different types of material are combined to create the photovoltaic cell. Due to the most recent demand for renewable energy, the manufacture of these cells has dramatically increased. There production has been steadily increasing since 2002 each year. Read on and find out how PV solar is one way to conserve natural resources in the future.

To change the radiation that we get from the sun into electricity, photovoltaics use solar cells. The photovoltaic effect is a process that explains how photons of light force movement of electrons until they are charged and electricity is created. The electricity that is created initially is direct current, and to use it in most instances, it is converted with an inverter to alternating current.

Many materials are used to create photovoltaics. Some of the materials include different types of silicons, copper indium selenide, and cadmium telluride. Polycrystalline silicon is a key material of a solar panel. The supply of solar panels that can be created is limited to the supply of polycrystalline silicon, and in 2006, half of the supply in world was in use for solar panels. There were twelve known factories that were producing the material in 2008.

An increase of twenty percent yearly is quite impressive for the photovoltaic, and this has been the case since 2002. It is considered to be one of the most rapidly growing types of renewable energy in the world. By the end of 2009, there were several installations that had photovoltaics installed and generated approximately 21,000 megawatts of power.

There are many countries in support of the photovoltaic as a source of renewable energy. In fact, there are several different governments that are providing incentives to both businesses and citizens to install packages. With the advancement of technology and the increase in manufacturing products, the prices have fallen to a more reasonable rate.

In 2008, it was said that solar power could provide one thousand times what the world would need and it only provide two tenths of a percent that year. By these statistics, it is apparent that renewable energy resources have not been used to the fullest; not even close. The prediction is that it will continue to double every two to three years. It could become the main power source for the world.

Many would speak against the dependability of solar power, but science can predict with extreme accuracy when the sun will be in view. There are many other sources of renewable energy that can be used with solar power to compensate for cloudy days, etc. Large power plants are actually operating on these systems.

Locate great prices on solar pv by looking online. There you will find many choices for pv panels to buy. Head online today and find more.

Photovoltaics And Their Cause In The Future Of Solar Power

July 29, 2010 by Douglas Rose

Solar energy is one of the most abundant forms of renewable energy available to the world. Photovoltaic cells are used to convert the energy from the sun into electric power. This is done by a process called the photovoltaic effect. Continue reading and learn about photovoltaics and their role in the future of renewable energy.

You can characterize solar technology by how it can be captured. It is captured in one of two ways, either passively without the use of any electrical or mechanical device like a solarium. It is also captured actively which would use some type of electrical or mechanical equipment for assistance. A photovoltaic cell can be used either way.

The photovoltaic effect involves creating voltage in whatever material is being exposed to electromagnetic radiation. The material is then charged with solar power. This effect was first noticed in 1839, by Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel.

The amount of solar energy that comes to the surface of the earth is so great that in one year it will exceeds double the amount of all the non-renewable resources of oil, coal, mined uranium, and natural gas combined on the earth. Different levels of solar energy can be captured in different areas around the world. The closer a location is to the equator, the more solar energy available.

Spacecraft and orbiting satellites were the first to use the photovoltaic cell. The cells are now used for many things including power. A cell module or a solar cell can produce a direct current, and to be used for residential and commercial use, it then needs to be converted to alternating current.

Solar panels that are made up of photovoltaic cells at one time were entirely too expensive to use at home or for general commercial use. Government incentive programs have made it possible for consumers to install systems at this time. Individuals are being encouraged worldwide to switch to renewable energy sources. Fortunately, over the past several years, the cost of solar panels have also decreased on their own.

When photovoltaic cells were first introduced to the public, they had menial uses, such as calculators and gadgets, but now, we are testing roadway lighting systems. The presence of them can be seen in street lamps, parking meters, and phones. There are power stations in different areas of the world in operation with photovoltaic panels. There is no doubt that the need for them will grow with the need for renewable energy.

Photovoltaic cells are utilized to take the energy from the sun and convert them into electric power. If you want it done correctly, , then you should get a PV installer to do the job for you.

What’s Good In Alternative Power Sources?

July 25, 2010 by Brent Herman

There are many types of alternative power for automobiles that we can select from. Human beings have formulated various ways of producing the said type of power. It is definitely highly advisable that automobile users go out and try these sources that are currently available. A factor that limits the use of these is the truth that not a lot of people know about these. The things that will be discussed here are the justifications of why it is better to use alternative power sources.

The price of gas is reasonably high in most cases. Current automobile models also require the type of burnt fuels that are being produced nowadays. In the United States it is found that the fuel sources that may be considered as alternative power, and we use these if we live within the country. The mentioned resources are renewable, just like ethanol, propane, or electric power. The economy of any country that increases its production reduces spending, and will greatly improve when citizens use alternate fuel sources.

Harmful gases are produced as fuels are burnt, and this may pose danger to the environment. A large part of the harsh gases that are found in the air are produced by automobiles that use burnt fuel as power. Carbon Dioxide is the main type of gas that is being emitted when the burning process happens, and the presence of this in the atmosphere contributes much to the possibility of global warming and to the disintegration of the ozone.

One of the countries that really depend on import of oil products is the United States. It is a fact that the US has not been known to provide its total needs for oil. One solution to this crisis is to persuade the use of alternative power sources for automobile fuels. It should be the aim of every country to reduce imports and rely upon the resources found within its vicinity.

It has been mentioned earlier that the process of burning fossil fuels is a factor that destroys the atmosphere. This is caused by oil-based products that undergo combustion and emit substances that negatively react with the air found in the ozone. To lessen the production of these emissions, the application of alternative power sources is a must. It is also a favorable choice to use fuel cells and electricity for they do not emit the destructive substances that fossil fuels produce.

Learn more about alternative power. Stop by Brent Herman’s site where you can find out all about alternative power and what it can do for you.

The 27M Solar Panel Kit

July 23, 2010 by Jordan Eske

The Nomad 27M solar panel is a convenient source of power made in mono-crystalline solar technology. This particular product uses 27 watts of electricity, and is rechargeable in all types of weather. When it’s sunny, it can take as little as four and half-hours to recharge fully. When partly sunny, it takes up to 7 hours and 15 hours in overcast weather. These times may vary depending on the battery you are using. For instance, the Sherpa 120 will take 10, 17 and 36 hours in sunny, partly sunny and overcast weather respectively. Others like Ranger 350 will take 31, 45 and 100 hours to recharge fully in the three different types of weather respectively. This is not a long time to wait considering there are no bills to pay for the recharge!

Using mono-crystalline solar technology, the Nomad 27M solar panel is by all accounts an outstanding source of free electricity. Not only can the unit be charged during all types of weather, but it also pumps out a generous 27 watts. As far as charging the batteries are concerned, on can expect a full charge within as little as 4 to 5 hours, providing you have sunny conditions. Even when it’s only partly sunny, a full charge will usually take no longer than 7 hours, and if it’s completely overcast, 15 hours is usually adequate. With that said, the actual time it takes for the batteries to recharge fully does also depend on the type of batteries being used. Even though some batteries can take 30 or 40 hours to recharge during adverse weather, it’s not really much of an issue, considering you’re getting electricity with having to worry about bills.

Of course the biggest advantage of the Nomad 27M solar panel over the 13.5M panel is that the 27M produces a higher output, thereby making is more efficient. With that said, the 27M is also capable of storing energy for a greater length of time than the 13.5M version. Both models do however use the same 12V voltage for charging purposes, although the 27M utilizes an 18V open voltage circuit.

Nomad 27M solar panel comes with three support rods made of aluminum, which provide stability when charging. You can use them to hold the panel in place when charging outdoors. It also comes with four sturdy grommets, which enable you to hang the panel at different angles. If you are worried about the clutter connecting electronics often brings, then you don’t have to anymore. It has a built in pocket that holds the connector cord in place when charging your items. This prevents the danger of someone tripping over the cord and being injured. You can place it at a far corner or if there are children in the house, you can easily put it under a chair or under the bed.

The Nomad 27M solar panel is made from top quality material which is durable and hardwearing. This essentially means that once you’ve bought it, you’ll have for many, many years. The unit is also water resistant, so even if you leave it standing outside overnight, you don’t need to worry about it getting damaged if it rains. Rain and dew will have absolutely no affect on it at all, but if you know you won’t be using it for a while, then it is of course better to fold it up so that it can be safely stored away in the case provided.

Jordan Eske has been living eco friendly since 2008. And in 2009 he decided to help consumers go green too with solar power. The Nomad 27M Solar Panel is rising in popularity for adventurers. This article, The 27M Solar Panel Kit has free reprint rights.

Landlords – Slash Your Energy Expenses And Attract Green Tenants

July 22, 2010 by Craig Axelrod

If you are a landlord solar energy can help you slash your heating costs and attract green tenants to your buildings. Using the latest green technologies will allow you to reduce the amount of fuel or electricity you use to heat your property. Solar heating tubes can help you do this. Whether you are a residential landlord or a commercial landlord solar energy will help you attract an emerging clientele who are worried about their impact on the environment, for both practical and ideological reasons. As government regulations concerning energy usage becomes stricter, businesses are under increasing pressure to consider facilities which reduce emissions as much as possible. Even residential tenants are becoming interested in homes which make use of green energy supplies.

How Much Benefit Do Solar Heating Tubes Give?

The extent of the benefits you can receive by installing solar heating tubes will depend chiefly on what kind of heating system your building employs. Almost all buildings can receive the advantages of using the solar heating tubes to heat your building’s water. Owners of buildings that use radiant heat will further benefit by using the solar heating tubes to heat the building itself. In either case, the savings can be quite considerable, especially when factored over a protracted time period.

Solar heating tubes help you slash your heating costs even if your building is in a colder environment, or one that receives fewer days of direct sunshine than others. The cylindrical tubes are a relatively new development, and represent a a new take on the standard, flat solar panels which have been with us since the 1960s. The way the tubes are shaped allows them to be positioned so as to be in continuous contact with the sun’s rays, thus increasing their efficiency. Vacuum tubes are also used for optimal insulation purposes, making sure that very little of the harvested energy is lost until it is used to heat the building. The more energy efficient the system the less you have to rely on electricity or gas, which will ultimately affect your bottom line by cutting your heating costs.

Spend Today, Save Tomorrow

Even though solar technology is nothing new, and environmentally aware tenants have long encouraged building owners to find energy efficient, renewable sources for providing heat and electricity, the means for doing so is now available. If you want to slash your energy expenses and attract green tenants, you should strongly consider installing the most up-to-date solar heating tubes at your earliest convenience. With many of the world’s governments on board with renewable energy programs, and many of them promising big incentives for landlords green energy not only makes ethical and environmental sense, but financial sense too. Why wait?

One last word: even if it were not for the fact that installing solar heating tubes will save you money, and even if it wasn’t true that using green energy will open up an entirely new client base of green tenants to you, it is also the right thing to do. All steps towards renewable, non petroleum and coal dependant energy sources not only save you money, but help save the planet; and that, simply put, is just the right thing to do.

Craig Axelrod is a partner for Emmy Energy, a NY solar power operation delivering solar heating tube systems solar pv systems & green systems throughout the Northeast.

Is A Gasifyer The Top Alternate Energy Source

July 7, 2010 by Bob Leverett

Heating wood or other organic matter in a gasifyer is done to release the volatile elements within the wood. Once liberated the gasses can either be used for heat or combusted in an engine to produce energy. The gasifier is essentially a container that is insulated to keep in the heat.

A modest bed of burning fuel is held within a container inside the drum. Outside air is allowed through to the bed of fuel creating a controlled burn, and starting the creation of gas.

The whole process can be self contained.

A modest controlled fire is required, partially because you do not want to simply set fire to all the combustion mass, and the small fire burning with limited oxygen is efficient. This warmth is used to dry out and heat the fuel stock, so that when it falls into the fire grate, it will promptly burn. Temperatures of the order of 1200 degrees F should be aimed for. The combustible gasses produced ascend and escape at the top of the gasifier. The gasses are then cooled and filtered, the cleanup is to cause less damage in an engine, and a denser gas has more power.

A small power station, transportable and self contained, is one of the clear-cut advantages of the gasifier. A four cylinder engine needs an oil drum sized gas producer, but if the fuel is a waste product, the gas is just as good.

Any combination of chipped wood and or branches, rice or maize husks, shells, pits, animal dung, in fact any waste natural material, might be used. In some parts a fuel crop such as a quick growing willow could be used.

Could this be a new source of fuel? Commercial agribusiness needs to spend cash disposing of large amounts of waste to landfill. And not to forget the char produced by the gasifier is a effective soil conditioner and fertiliser, a eco-friendly bonus?

My specialty is more with the usage of a gasifyer to tighten house hold expenses and or off grid living.

The end result with home gasification is a clean burning fuel with little contamination. An additional gain.

1 gallon of petrol is said by many to be equivalent to 20lbs of dry chipped wood. A gasifier of appropriate size will provide all the gas to run a certain engine, the larger the gasifier the bigger the engine. A gasifyer does not necessarily call for any external power although this will help to start the machine, someone will still have to fuel the machine. With an internal combustion engine the inductance will pull air through the hearth creating a self sustaining sequence.

A petrol engined generator plus a gasifer and a fuel supply makes an ideal alternate energy source.

This Process is Two Hundred Years old, but is just as useful now when the world needs an appropriate new fuel source. Find out now how heat and electricity can be produced with the latest generation of gasifiers. Find out more information at The Gasifyer. Com. Consider Renewable Energy And How It Can Profit You

Energy is actually in abundance and waiting to be harnessed for our use. The limits of what we can do with alternate energy sources is only restricted by our own intelligence and imagination. Our present and future depend on our ability to advance our recovery of these powers to supply the needs of not only our own country, but perhaps someday the needs of other countries that are in the world. It may someday be that when you flip the switch for you home lighting, that it will be completely controlled by solar lighting in your own yard, or solar lighting from an electrical plant. Not only are these sources good for our immediate future, but they will benefit future generations. They are also sustainable energy, and will not use other natural resources that may be needed in the future. Continue reading and learn alternative energy and how it can benefit you.

Alternative sources of energy can come in different forms and be converted into both heat and electricity for us to use. Just because a particular type of energy is an alternative source, it does not necessarily mean that it is also a renewable source. For example, hydroelectric type energy uses reservoirs that fill up, and then they will have to be emptied before they can be used again. The process of emptying one is quite expensive. Although we have made great strides in a short period of time, we still have a long way to go in order to be ready for the upcoming demands.

Photovoltaic cells are one way we use to soak up the energy of the sun and convert it to either electricity or heat. These cells actually convert the radiation of the sun into direct current (DC) electricity. The manufacture of this particular type of cell has been increasing by at least twenty percent per year since 2002. These are not the same little solar cells that originated in your first solar calculator more than a decade ago.

Solar thermal type collectors can also be used to turn solar radiation into energy, heat or electricity. There are three types of solar thermal collector, low, medium, and high temperature. The low and medium temperature collectors are both used to heat water. Low is used for pools, while the medium can be used for residential and commercial locations. High temperature collectors or not photovoltaic and convert the sun’s radiation directly into electricity. With a high temperature collector, the sun is directed either toward lenses or mirrors.

Biomass power is created when plants absorb the sunlight for us. This process is actually known as photosynthesis. When we need a fuel source, the plants can be burned for fuel. We can use this in different ways, either by growing plants for fuel, or using what is left over from already grown plants.

The wind is a special source of alternative power, as it is completely green. It can generate enough electricity for us to use commercially by operating large wind turbines. The down side of wind power is the space that is required and the unpredictability of the wind, although some states have more wind than others. These states are currently operating on a large scale.

Geothermal energy actually creates electricity from the heat located in the earth. This heat radiates from the earth’s core. When the heat is trapped, it is turned into steam and can be converted into energy.

We have been using hydropower for a very long time, and one very large example would be the Hoover Dam. It is the larges hydroelectric plant that exists. Small amounts of flowing water can generate great deals of energy to be converted into electrical energy.

We have really just hit the tip of the sunbeam so to speak in our efforts. We need to have solar panels in every yard and wind tunnels in every field, but we are getting there. You are on the way because you took the time to discover the future and learn alternative energy.

Do you should find a alternative energy? Well, we all should save the earth and should think about that before it’s to late. Our information can help you learn more about the newest incoming alternative ways to produce energy. Http://www.earthforenergysite.com
